Technological tools using artificial intelligence (AI) are already widely used in educational environments. Applications such as Grammarly help to check grammar and spelling, Quillbot offers capabilities to paraphrase, summarise and adapt a text, while creative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools such as ChatGPT, CoPilot and Gemini enable the generation of entire texts in seconds and are used as virtual teachers in a variety of cognitive areas. At the same time, these tools raise concerns about plagiarism, academic integrity and ethics related to privacy of personal data, legitimacy and dispersal of biases.
How do Universities respond to these technological developments and challenges? Is the utilization of educational AI tools something to be decided by the discretion of their users (teachers and trainees) or should the community introduce regulatory rules, good practices, protocols for proper use and advise on ways of use that are discouraged or even forbidden?
This workshop aims to lay the foundations for the start of a constructive and productive dialogue between the members of the AUTH community (in the first phase) in order to:
- record the experiences, ideas and suggestions of the participants regarding the above questions
- identify possible converging views (or productive disagreements) on how the community would like to see protocols for the good use of these technologies developed and implemented in higher education.
Invitation to participate in the Workshop
- The organisers of the conference invite all teaching staff (permanent and temporary) of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki who would like to present their experience and position themselves to submit an extended abstract in which they present their experience and position on the topic in a concise manner:
- Their experience with AI tools in their educational activity
- Their concerns and suggestions for ways to use, control, etc.
- Instructions/example for writing the extended abstract can be downloaded: <here>
- Submit a summary (in Greek) by email: kedima_info@auth.gr
- Deadline for submission: 3 July 2024
- Acceptance/presentation criteria: all submissions will be accepted if:
- They refer in a meaningful way to notes 1 and 2 above, and
- They are signed by a lecturer of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki who will commit himself/herself to attend the conference.
- How to conduct:
- The workshop will be held “in person” on Friday 27/9/2024
- Participants will have time (depending on the number of submissions) to present and answer some questions. In case of a large number of submissions, a round table solution (e.g. per School or Department) will be considered in order to share the presentation time among all participants of a School/Department.
- The presentations of the participants will be posted on the TLC website.
